Men's Basketball Set to Open 115th Season at Northeastern Monday Night on NESNplus

BOSTON – Entering a new era following the graduation of 10 Terriers, the Boston University men's basketball team will open its 115th season at crosstown rival Northeastern Monday night with the NESNplus broadcast slated to begin at 8 p.m.

The BU-Northeastern rivalry is one of the most underrated nationally, as the two squads are tied, 75-75, with 15 of the last 16 meetings being decided by single digits.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • Without the top six scorers from the previous season for the first time according to statistical records that date back to 1948, the Terriers return just 23.3 percent of their scoring, 15.1 percent of made 3-pointers and 41.5 percent of rebounds.
  • No. 2 all-time at BU with 202 victories, Joe Jones enters his 13th season at the helm and is seeking the program's third postseason berth in five years after capturing the Patriot League title in 2020 and advancing to the CBI quarterfinals in 2022.
  • Named team captain, senior guard Miles Brewster started seven of the last eight games this past winter and finished the year averaging 4.7 ppg while compiling both the second most assists (51) and steals (30) in 17.8 mpg.
  • Senior wing Anthony Morales is the top returning scorer at 5.1 ppg with a 19-point performance against Hartford, while junior forward Malcolm Chimezie is the top rebounder at 3.8 rpg, highlighted by a 11-rebound contest against Colgate. Sophomore Forward Otto Landrum led the Terriers with 18 blocks last season while averaging 3.0 rpg.
  • In total, BU has eight newcomers, including a pair junior transfers in Ethan Okwuosa and Ben Palacios.
  • Okwuosa helped lead Southern New Hampshire to the NCAA regional semifinals this past year averaging 12.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.3 apg and 38.6 3FG% en route to Second Team All-NE10 accolades. A 2023 Second Team All-GLVC honoree at Maryville in MIssouri, Palacios averaged 14.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 38.0 3FG%.
  • BU welcomes four freshmen, including Kyrone Alexander who averaged 20 points and five rebounds over the summer at the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 Pre-Qualifiers for Barbados. A Biosteel All-Canadian, Matai Baptiste participated in Canada's 2022 FIBA U18 Americas Championship training camp. Spencer Joyner joins the Terriers from New Jersey, while Michael McNair came to BU from California.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
  • The Huskies were picked to finish seventh in the 14-team Colonial Athletic Association after posting a 10-20 record (6-12 CAA), including a 6-6 home mark.
  • 6-foot-7 forward Chris Doherty earned preseason All-CAA honorable mention recognition after averaging 8.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg and 2.3 apg alongside 17 blocks last season.
  • 6-foot-5 guard Joe Pridgen, the 2020 Patriot League Rookie of the Year while at Holy Cross, is the No. 2 returning scorer (7.3 ppg) and rebounder (4.9 rpg).
  • NU welcomes five newcomers, including a pair of graduate transfers in 6-foot-6 forward Bryce Johnson (10.1 ppg, 8.3 rpg last season at Sacred Heart) and 6-foot-6 guard Luka Sakota (7.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg last season at Harvard).
  • The Huskies are 25-6 in home games against non-conference opponents dating back to the 2014-15 season with BU collecting one of those wins in 2018.
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU and Northeastern are tied in the all-time series, 75-75, that dates back to 1920-21.
  • 15 of the last 16 meetings have been decided by single digits with nine contests decided by five points or less.
  • The Terriers earned a 72-63 home victory last year after dropping a 49-48 heartbreaker on the road in 2021.
  • BU last won at Matthews Arena in 2018, 77-74.
