Terriers Take Part in 27th Annual Holiday Reading Program
December 19, 2023 | General, Community Service
BOSTON – For the 27th straight year, the Boston University Department of Athletics celebrated its Holiday Reading Program with student-athletes and staff visiting Boston Public Schools.
Nearly 200 Terriers from 22 varsity teams participated in the annual event which started in 1997. The multi-day event, held on Dec. 13 and 14, took place at local Boston public schools in the Allston, Dorchester, Roxbury and South End neighborhoods.
In conjunction with BU's Government and Community Affairs Department, the athletes read to elementary classes and then presented each student with a book purchased by Boston University. In addition to each student receiving a book, each classroom was also given a book donated by BU for the teacher's permanent collection.
This year, student-athletes visited classrooms in six Boston public schools and read to hundreds of children. On Dec. 13, the Terriers spent the morning in Allston at the Gardner Pilot Academy and the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. That afternoon, they visited Trotter Elementary (Dorchester) and Mason Elementary (Roxbury). The following day, BU student-athletes traveled to Blackstone Elementary and the Hurley K-8 School in the South End.
