Turnpike Trophy

Ricard, D'Alto Named Turnpike Trophy Top Performers

July 26, 2023

BOSTON and WORCESTER, Mass. – After an exciting race in 2022-23 for the reignited Turnpike Trophy rivalry, Boston University and Holy Cross have announced the inaugural Turnpike Trophy Top Performers via fan voting.

Each school conducted polls with three female nominees and three male nominees based on their performances in BU-Holy Cross competitions over the past year. The top vote-getters will now comprise the first-ever list of Turnpike Trophy Top Performers. The winners of the Crusaders' polls were Mary Edmonds (women's ice hockey) and Joe Octave (men's basketball), while the Terriers' winners were Kasey Ricard (softball) and Vince D'Alto (men's lacrosse).

Edmonds collected the game-winning goal 23 seconds into the overtime period as Holy Cross earned a 2-1 victory against BU, also giving the Crusaders a 2-1 series win over the Terriers. She finished the night with two goals from six shots.

During a Feb. 1 victory in Boston, Octave scored a career-high 27 points while tying what was then a school single-game record with seven three-pointers made. He also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals, while hitting 9 of 12 shots from the field.

Ricard was dominant on the mound in BU's sweep in softball on April 2-3, totaling 29 strikeouts in 14.1 innings including a 17-strikeout performance in addition to her first collegiate no-hitter.

D'Alto recorded season highs of nine points and six goals in the Terriers' 23-9 victory in men's lacrosse at Nickerson Field on March 18.

Other nominees were Bronagh Power-Cassidy (women's basketball), Jenna Giardina (women's lacrosse), Marcus Williams (men's soccer) and Thomas McIntire (men's lacrosse) from Holy Cross and Rachel Borzymowski (field hockey), Jenna Oldham (women's soccer), Dolan Grisbaum (men's swimming) and Jonah Dickson (men's tennis) from BU.

This year's Turnpike Trophy race was the closest ever as Holy Cross won seven of the first eight meetings in the spring semester to take a 7-6 lead before the Terriers closed out with wins in the final five contests to claim the title by a score of 12-8.

The 2023-24 Turnpike Trophy competition will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 16, when Holy Cross hosts BU in field hockey for a 4 p.m. contest.
