BOSTON - The Boston University Department of Athletics underwent major renovations at three facilities during the summer, as New Balance Field and the Track & Tennis Center had full surface replacements and a track was installed at Nickerson Field.
New Balance Field
Project completed in August 2023. The New Balance Field project entailed a complete resurface as well as a restructure of the field and concourse subsurface in addition to waterproofing enhancements. The new A12 surface by Astroturf is a knitted nylon monofilament fabric construction that makes for a fast, smooth, non-directional and durable surface.
The hockey field is "stadium green" while the outer boundaries are a darker "turf green." The west end zone features the arched Boston logo. Additional enhancements include new padding and netting, networking upgrades to support broadcasts, international style cages, and a camera system by 360 Sports Intelligence to aid the field hockey team in reviewing practices and games.
Track & Tennis Center
For the first time since the facility opened in 2002, the multi-use sport surface in the Track & Tennis Center has been fully resurfaced. The new Beynon Sports BSS2000 RE System, 5mm thick with Hobart Texture, will be unveiled for the 2023-24 year. The oval and long jump runway are BU red in 1-2mm EPDM and the infield, tennis courts and jogging lane are .05‐1mm EPDM in mid-grey. The throwing cage was also fully reworked and now features a Polyturf SP surface with smooth texture at 13mm over the sector and 5mm on surrounding areas. As part of the project, the curtain system will also be replaced over the course of the upcoming year.
Nickerson Outdoor Track
After the Nickerson Field was resurfaced in the summer of 2022, the installation of a new track surrounding the field was completed in summer 2023. The track is a durable Stockmeier Urethane Sandwich System 14mm track in red. Though the four lane track is not a competition venue, the facility serves as an asset for BU's Track and Cross Country teams, as well as many other BU community members.
