BOSTON - The Boston University men's swimming & diving team rolled past Holy Cross, 204-90, in the season opener on Saturday at FitRec Competition Pool.

Freshman Giovanni Sullo won two events (200 fly, 400 IM) in his collegiate debut while seniors Jed Tan (50 free, 100 fly) and Justin Liao (100 breast, 200 breast) also picked up a pair of victories.

Sophomore Zein Mahana swept the diving events, highlighted by a career-high 335.70 in the 3-meter event. He won the 1-meter with a score of 295.80. 

BU led wire-to-wire as it took the top two spots in the opening relay with junior Tony Ponomarev, Liao, Tan and freshman Abraham Lee leading the way in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:32.60.

Sophomore Jonny Farber picked up the first individual win of the day by touching the wall first in the 100 backstroke in a time of 51.11. BU had the top four finishers in the race.

Liao swept the breaststroke events, claiming a win in the 100 with a time of 57.80 before emerging victorious in the 200 in 2:08.39.

Sullo's first collegiate win came in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.33. He later took first in the 400 IM, posting a time of 4:07.33.

In the 50 free, Tan placed first in 21.70 seconds. He would go on to claim a win in the 100 fly with a time of 50.73.

Freshman Charlie Nenchev made a statement in his Terrier debut, taking first in the 100 free at 47.01, while Ponomarev easily won the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:51.10.

The Terriers put the finishing touches on the victory when Nenchev, freshman Derek Cheng, Lee and freshman Andrew Ignatescu closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay (3:08.67).

BU will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 19) when it visits Bucknell. Meet time is set for noon.
