Falkstrom, Ponomarev Win Silver on Opening Day of FISU America Games

CALI, COLUMBIA - Junior Tony Ponomarev and Kyle Falkstrom '23 each earned silver medals on the opening day of the FISU America Games at the Hernando Botero O'Bryne Swimming Pool on Tuesday morning.

In the fourth event of the morning, Falkstrom swam the 50-meter breaststroke in a time of 28.75 seconds to claim a silver medal in between two Brazilian swimmers. In the next men's event, Ponomarev took second in the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 58.90 seconds for the second BU silver of the day.

Ponomarev and Falkstrom are among 26 Patriot League student-athletes who comprise the United States swimming team at these FISU America Games. The other competing nations are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

BU assistant coach Stephen Andersen is serving as an assistant on the Team USA staff at the event.

On Wednesday, Ponomarev will compete in the 200 back while Falkstrom will swim in the 100 breast event.
