BOSTON – For the 28th consecutive year, the Boston University Department of Athletics celebrated its Holiday Reading Program with student-athletes and staff visiting Boston Public Schools.
Over 200 Terriers from all 24 of BU's varsity programs participated in the annual event, which began in 1997. Held on Dec. 11, 12 and 13, the event took place at local Boston public schools in the Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, Roxbury and South End neighborhoods.
In conjunction with BU's Government and Community Affairs Department, the athletes read to elementary classes and then presented each student with a book purchased by Boston University. In addition to each student receiving a book, each classroom was also given a book donated by BU for the teacher's permanent collection.
This year, student-athletes visited classrooms in seven Boston public schools and read to nearly 700 children. On Dec. 11, the Terriers visited Horace Mann School for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and Gardner Pilot Academy in Allston. BU went to Mason Elementary (Roxbury), Baldwin Pilot Academy (Brighton), Trotter Elementary (Dorchester) and Hurley K-8 (South End) on Dec. 12. The final school BU visited was Blackstone Elementary in the South End on Dec. 13.
