Men's Basketball Holds Annual Team Banquet

May 1, 2024

BOSTON – The Boston University men's basketball team recently held its annual year-end banquet at the Stockyard Restaurant in Brighton with alumni, family and supporters all in attendance. Head coach Joe Jones and his staff handed out a combined seven awards to six Terriers with senior Miles Brewster collecting two of them.

Terrier basketball broadcast announcer Brian Maurer (COM'07) served as master of ceremonies, with his play-by-play partner, Doug Brown (COM'78), getting recognized following Brown's retirement at the end of the season with 35 years of experience calling games on radio, TV and multiple streaming platforms. Coach Jones addressed the gathering with his reflections on the season that ended with BU finishing second in the PL standings for the first time since 2017 despite the graduation of 10 Terriers in the summer of 2023. During the ceremony, seniors Anthony Morales and Andrew Patnode joined Brewster in sharing their favorite moments from their time on Commonwealth Ave. as well.

Named team captain in the preseason, Brewster collected both Lou Cohen MVP honors and the Tunji Awojobi Award as the squad's top defensive player. He started all 33 contests on his way to becoming the first BU guard and third overall Terrier to earn both All-PL (Second Team) and All-Defensive Team honors in the same season, joining 2022 PL Player of the Year Sukhmail Mathon ('22) and 2020 PL Tournament MVP Max Mahoney ('20). Brewster ranked in the top 15 in the PL in seven categories, including 1.5 spg (#3), 40.7 3FG% (#5), 3.3 apg (#6) and 10.8 ppg (#15) while also ranking third (75th nationally) with a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio. Highlight performances include 21-point games against Colgate and American and also a personal-best five-steal contest at Rutgers.

Even though he was hampered by a preseason and mid-season injury, Morales finished the year with a personal-best and team-high 10.9 ppg to collect the inaugural Sixth Man of the Year Award, which is presented to an individual who is considered a starter based on his valuable contributions through hard work and production. The Boston native tallied a career-high 27 points in the PL OT semifinal clash with Lehigh after previously totaling 20+ points against Loyola Maryland, Bucknell and Holy Cross. He also averaged a personal-best 4.3 rpg with 18 blocks while shooting 89.2 percent at the charity stripe and 38.5 percent from behind the arc.

Joining Brewster as the only other Terrier to start all 33 games, Kyrone Alexander received the John Holland Award as the program's most outstanding freshman. A 2024 PL All-Rookie Team honoree, he finished third on the team averaging 9.3 ppg while adding 4.2 rpg alongside 27 steals and 14 blocks. The Bridgetown, Barbardos, native made his presence felt immediately at Northeastern, becoming the first rookie Terrier to lead BU in points in a season opener since 2006 with 15 points. Highlighted by a 23-point and eight-rebound performance vs. Loyola Maryland alongside a six-assist game at Bucknell, he led BU in points eight times, in assists seven times and in rebounds on four occasions.

After playing 73 minutes in 12 games as a freshman, sophomore Nico Nobili started 31 games en route to claiming the Arturo Brown Award as the team's most improved player. He scored in double figures 10 times, including a season-high 13 points vs. Lafayette, to finish at 7.1 ppg while also ranking second on the team at 4.4 rpg alongside 17 blocks. In a win at American, the Bologna, Italy native, finished just one point shy of a double-double with 11 rebounds after hauling in 22 total boards his rookie season. Other highlight performances include his four blocks vs. Navy and three blocks at Lafayette.

A native of Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey, Ben Roy also made big strides in his second season with the Terriers, averaging 22.8 mpg after seeing a combined 68 minutes of action the previous year to earn the Reggie Stewart Award for best exemplifying the traits of BU basketball. He owns a 3.23 GPA majoring in business administration and management while helping direct the offense. He tallied a career-high 11 points vs. Bryant and dished out at least three assists in a game seven times, including five helpers against VTSU-Johnson. On the defensive front, he claimed three steals vs. Army West Point.

Enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, freshman Matai Baptiste earned the Richard Taylor Academic Award for his success in the classroom and on the court. Earning a 4.00 GPA in the summer and fall, he made four starts in 33 games played. The Toronto, Ontario, native averaged 5.5 ppg and 3.4 rpg while earning 24 steals alongside 10 blocks. He tallied 12 points at Sacred Heart after combining for 23 in matchups vs. Davidson and VTSU-Johnson. In the post, he hauled in a season-high eight boards at Bucknell with eight points.
