During the two-year period from 1985-87 Lauren Andrews dominated
the collegiate track and field scene to a degree that few
Terriers had equaled before or since.
Her crowning achievement came at the 1986 NCAA Championships,
when she put the shot 53'-2 1/4" to become the University's
first-ever All-American in women's outdoor track and field.
At the regional level, Andrews was a nine-time Greater Boston
and New England individual champion, who helped the Terriers
to seven team titles during this period.
She began to step into the spotlight during the winter of
1985, when she captured the shot put title at the Greater
Boston Championships to help the Terriers to the overall team
title. When the action moved outdoors in the spring, she won
the shot put at the Greater Boston and New England Championships,
and again helped the Terriers to a first-place team finish
at each meet.
The following winter Andrews added the 35-LB weight throw
to her repertoire and won the event at the 1986 Greater Boston
Indoor Championships, before putting the shot farther than
the field at the New England Championships. Her efforts again
led the Terriers to the overall team title at each meet.
During the 1986 outdoor season, Andrews demonstrated an equal
degree of proficiency in the discus, an event she won at the
Greater Boston and New England Championships, while defending
her shot put title at each meet, and again helping the Terriers
to an additional pair of team championships.
Before completing her competitive career, Andrews bettered
her statistics in the outdoor shot put and discus (162-8),
and the indoor shot put (51-7 1/4) and 20-LB weight (54-1/2).
Complementing her athletic success, Andrews was an outstanding
student, who earned the 1987 Sargent College Student-Athlete
Award and was a Scarlet Key recipient. In recognition of her
all-around accomplishments, Andrews received the Gretchen
Schuyler Award at the University's Outstanding Female Student-Athlete
in 1987.
