Gretchen Ebner competed in the NCAA Championships and qualified
for the US Olympic Trials during her four years with the Boston
University swimming program.
During her senior year in 1987-88, Ebner captured the 200-yard
backstroke at the ECAC Championships in a meet record 2:03.00,
and eclipsed her own school record in the process. A few weeks
later, she represented Boston University at the NCAA Championships,
where she placed 30th in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke.
Her performance during the season earned her a spot at the
U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 backstroke.
Her strong finish was typical of her entire career at Boston
University. In her debut campaign, Ebner achieved times of
59.14 in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:06.24 in the 200-yard
backstroke, and went undefeated in each event.
Returning to the pool for her sophomore season, Ebner captured
her first 200 backstroke title at the ECAC Championships and
finished third in the 100 backstroke at the same meet. She
again qualified for the ECAC Championship during her junior
season, when she won a combined 16 races in the two events.
