A native of Virginia, Nell came north to Sargent College
in the fall of 1931 at the age of 16. One of the youngest
members of her class, she began an interclass athletic career
in which she excelled in basketball, hockey, lacrosse, track,
riding, fistball, and table tennis. One of the highlights
of her career was her junior year when she received Sargent
College's prestigious Tnegras Award.
After graduating, she moved to New Hampshire where she received
her master's in physical education at the University of New
Hampshire. She taught physical education in the Durham, NH
school system until 1943 when she moved back to her native
Virginia while her husband served the U.S. military in Europe.
At the conclusion of World War II and the return of her husband,
Nell moved back to New Hampshire.
She remained active in athletics, and skied the mountains
of Vail, Colorado until the age of 70. She instilled her love
of athletics into her children and grandchildren.
She also maintained her strong ties to Sargent College, and
was her class secretary during the 1992-93 year.
