BOSTON - Galen Young scored 14 of his game-high 16 points in the second half to lead UNC Charlotte to a 65-50 victory over Boston University in the season opener for both teams... After leading 31-30 at halftime, B.U. was held to just 19 points in the second half, shooting just 30 percent (9-of-30) from the field... The loss also snapped a 10-game B.U. home winning streak on "The Roof"... Senior forward Walter Brown led B.U. with 13 points and 11 rebounds, his 13th career double double in 30 games as a Terrier... LeVar Folk added 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, including a 60-foot first half buzzer beater to give B.U. its halftime advantage... The 49ers opened the second half with a 11-0 run and never trailed again... The Terriers did outrebound UNCC, 50-41, but shot just 35.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field... B.U. dropped to 3-7 against Conference USA... It was also the first B.U. season-opening loss at home since 1982, a span of five games.
TUSCALOOSA, AL - M.C. Mazique scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds to lead Alabama (2-1) to a 75-52 victory over visiting Boston University... Jeremy Hayes added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Crimson Tide... Trailing 24-10 midway through the first half, the Terriers used a 17-3 run to tie the score at 27 on a three-point field goal by Mike Costello with 3:54 remaining... The Crimson Tide then scored the last eight points of the half... B.U. cut the lead to five points, 39-34, with 17:55 left as Costello hit one free throw, but that would be as close as it would get... Alabama scored the next 10 points to put the game out of reach... Costello led B.U. with 12 points, including a trio of three-pointers... It was the 15th time in 62 career outings that Costello has hit at least three three-point field goals in a game.... Walter Brown added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds... After two games, the Terriers have averaged 51.0 points, their lowest scoring output to start a season since 1953-54.
HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA - Consensus preseason All-American Wally Szczerbiak scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half to lead No. 24 Miami (Ohio) University to a 70-53 victory over Boston University... The loss dropped the Terriers to 0-3 for the first time since 1995-96... Playing without two starters - Billy Beal and Mike Costello - B.U. trailed by just two points, 31-29, at halftime... A 20-8 late first half run kept B.U. close... Matt Curley and LeVar Folk each scored nine first-half points... In the second half, the Terriers shot just 28 percent (7-of-25) and the RedHawks took advantage with a 21-5 run to take an 18-point lead, 54-36, with 9:56 to go... Freshman Dereck Franklin scored a team-high 15 points, 13 in the second half... Folk added 14, including three three-point field goals, and Curley added 11... BOSTON - Marcus Blossom's free throw with 30.4 seconds left lifted Northeastern to a 68-67 victory over visiting Boston University in the America East season opener for both teams... It was just the second B.U. loss in the last nine meetings with NU... With B.U. down four points, 68-64, LeVar Folk (13 points) hit a three-pointer with 19 seconds left to cut the deficit to one... After NU's Terry Kringe missed the front end of a one-and-one with 8.1 seconds left, Folk missed an off-balance 17-footer at the buzzer... NU led, 38-31, at halftime and increased its lead to 15 points, 48-33, with 15:55 to go... B.U. responded with a 21-2 run over the next five minutes to regain the lead... After three more ties, Billy Beal (season-high 14 points) hit a three-pointer to give B.U. a 64-61 lead at the 5:26 mark... It would be B.U.'s last lead, and its last points until Folk's three-pointer with 19 seconds left... Mike Costello added 13 points - all in the second half... CAMBRIDGE, MA - Walter Brown scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Boston University to a 68-64 victory over Harvard... It was the Terriers' sixth straight win over the Crimson... B.U. closed the first half with an 11-3 run to lead 33-23 at the break... Brown keyed the run with two three-pointers... The Terriers opened the second half with a 12-3 run to take their biggest lead, 45-26, with 16:33 to go... Once again, Brown was a big part, scoring seven points in the spurt... Harvard hung tough, cutting the lead to four points, 52-48, at the 7:20 mark, before B.U. scored the next eight points, including four free throws each by LeVar Folk and Billy Beal... The Crimson hung tough, but Beal (season-high 17 points) and Folk each converted two free throws in the final 28 seconds to clinch the victory... Folk added 13 points and seven rebounds... BOSTON - Mike Costello tied a career high with 17 points and Walter Brown added 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Boston University to a 66-46 non-conference victory over Manhattan... It was B.U.'s 12th victory in its last 13 home games... B.U. took a 31-19 halftime lead as LeVar Folk hit an off-balance three-pointer at the first-half buzzer... Costello added 10 first-half points... The Terriers opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 40-21 lead after a Matt Curley (8 points, 7 rebounds) layup with 15:02 to go... After Ken Michin was fouled by Manhattan's Noah Coughlin, three technicals were called after a series of pushing and shoving, including one on Folk, who was ejected for fighting... BOZEMAN, MT - Colorado scored the first 12 points of the contest and never looked back, defeating Boston University, 88-51, in the first round of the Touch America/Holiday Stores Classic... It was B.U.'s worst loss since a 73-42 setback to Drexel on February 9, 1997... The Terriers played without senior starters LeVar Folk (serving NCAA one-game suspension) and Billy Beal (ankle injury)... Colorado jumped to a 12-0 lead, and extended its advantage to 21 points, 40-19, with 2:30 remaining in the first half. The Buffaloes shot a blistering .633 (19-of-30) from the field in the first half... Dereck Franklin was the lone bright spot for B.U., scoring 10 first-half points... In the second half, B.U. cut the lead to 19 points, 55-36, on a jumper by Matt Curley with 13:34 to go, but Colorado responded with a 22-4 run to take a 77-40 lead with 4:41 remaining... Tyron Manlove led Colorado with a game-high 21 points, while Curley led B.U. with 14. Franklin added 13 points and five assists. Walter Brown added a game-high eight rebounds and eight points... The Terriers shot just .340 (17-of-50) from the field... B.U. did hand out 14 assists on its 17 field goals.. The Terriers extended their three-point streak to 74 games... Brown has pulled down at least seven rebounds in 30 of his 38 games as a Terrier.
BOZEMAN, MT - Walter Brown scored a season-high 25 points to lead Boston University to an 80-58 victory over Canisius in the third-place game of the Touch America/Holiday Stores Classic... The 80 points represented a season high for B.U...The Terriers shot a blistering .574 from the field, including .607 in the first half... Brown scored 15 of his points in the first half as the Terriers staked a 39-27 lead... With the game tied at 12 midway through the first half, the Terriers scored 11 straight points to take a 23-12 lead with 8:13 to go... B.U. increased its lead to 15, 36-21, on a layup by Jean Avebe (career-high 14 points) with 2:49 remaining... Canisius opened the second half with a 9-3 run to get within three points, 42-39, at the 15:27 mark, but B.U. used an 11-5 run to take a 53-42 lead with 9:16 left... B.U. would then outscore the Golden Griffins, 27-16, the rest of the way... Folk added a season-high 16 points, including four three-point field goals... TOWSON, MD - Dereck Franklin scored a season-high 18 points and Walter Brown added his 14th career double double (15 points, 12 rebounds) to lead Boston University to a 66-58 victory over Towson in an America East contest... B.U. took a 40-32 halftime lead as Brown connected for 12 points... In the second half, the Terriers extended their lead to 10 points, 44-34, before Towson gradually cut the deficit to three, 50-47, with 7:09 to play... However, LeVar Folk (11 points) hit a driving layup and Franklin hit a 16-foot jumper to push the lead back to seven... Towson make one last effort, coming within four, 57-53, with 2:40 left to go, but Brown (a layup), and seven B.U. free throws, including a perfect 6-of-6 from Franklin, sealed the Terriers' first conference victory... Folk tied season highs in rebounds (8), assists (8) and steals (4)... Matt Curley added 10 points... It was the Terriers' sixth straight win over the Tigers... B.U. held Towson to just .333 (8-of-24) shooting in the second half, and .367 (18-of-49) for the contest.
NEWARK, DE - LeVar Folk's 10-foot jumper hit off the rim at the buzzer, giving Delaware a 75-74 overtime victory over Boston University... It was the Terriers' second one-point loss in three league games... B.U. jumped out to a 17-6 lead as Walter Brown scored seven points... Delaware rebounded and took a 35-27 halftime lead... In the second half, B.U. regained the lead, 53-51, with 6:24 to go on two free throws from Brown, who would finish with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds... Mike Costello's three-pointer with 3:20 left gave B.U. a six-point advantage, 61-55, but the Blue Hens rallied back as Tyrone Perry's eight-foot jumper with 7.2 seconds remaining forced overtime... Billy Beal (10 points) gave B.U. the lead with a three-pointer at the 4:42 mark, but Delaware tied the score 40 seconds later... Trailing 74-72, Brown hit a layup and was fouled with 34 seconds to go, but missed the free throw... With 15 seconds left, Madou Diouf was fouled and hit 1-of-2 free throws giving Delaware the one-point advantage... Jean Avebe scored 10 of his career-high 16 points in the second half... BOSTON - Despite 14 points and a season-high nine assists from LeVar Folk, Boston University dropped an 80-66 decision to visiting Maine... The loss snapped the Terriers' 23-game conference home winning streak... It was also the Terriers' first loss to the Black Bears in the last eight meetings... Maine took a 38-36 halftime lead, and extended the advantage to 11 points, 51-40, with a 13-4 run to open the second half... The Terriers cut the lead to six, 55-49, on a Matt Curley layup with 12:48 to go... However, Maine increased the lead to 14, 65-51, with 8:26 remaining... Folk's two free throws put B.U. within six, 67-61, with 4:59 to play, but the Black Bears outscored the Terriers, 15-5, the rest of the way... Billy Beal added 12 points and Curley 10 for B.U... Walter Brown was held to seven points, all in the first half, but recorded a career-high four assists... Maine's five starters all scored in double figures... BOSTON - Billy Beal scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, and tied a school record with seven three-pointers as B.U. defeated UNH, 84-49, on "The Roof"... Beal tied the record of Mark Daly '92, who hit seven in a game twice in one week in the 1991-92...B.U. also set a school record with 14 three-pointers, breaking the former record of 12, which was set against Hartford on Jan. 13, 1994... The Terriers shot 14-of-24 (.583) from three-point territory... LeVar Folk became the 23rd player in the 90-year history of the B.U. men's basketball program to score 1,000 points... Folk (6 points, 8 assists) hit a layup with 9:45 to go in the second half to reach the milestone...With B.U. leading 29-20 late in the first half, Beal (7-of-11 3-PT) connected on three straight threes in a 1:17 span to give the Terriers a 38-22 lead with 1:25 left in the half... HEMPSTEAD, NY - Despite 15 points - on five three-point field goals- from Billy Beal, Boston University dropped its second straight game, 66-50, to Hofstra... Trailing, 8-0, to start the game, the Terriers took an 11-10 lead on a Beal three-pointer with 12:57 left in the first half... However, it would be B.U.'s last lead of the contest... Hofstra closed the first half with a 6-0 run to take a 31-21 halftime advantage... The Terriers could get no closer than six points in the second half... Dereck Franklin added 10 points... Jean Avebe added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds... The Terriers did hit 10 three-point field goals; their third straight double-figure outing.
BOSTON - Tony Orciari scored 32 points, including a perfect 16-of-16 from the free throw line, to lead Vermont to a 73-67 overtime victory over B.U... The Terriers played without their top two scorers, Walter Brown (12.5 ppg) and LeVar Folk (10.6 ppg), who sat out after violating a team rule... After a 22-22 halftime tie, Vermont opened the second half with a 20-4 run to take its biggest lead, 42-26, with 11:27 left... Vermont kept its lead in double figures until B.U. used a 17-3 run in the final 5:14 of regulation to force overtime... Dereck Franklin (15 points) hit a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left to force overtime... The loss dropped the Terriers' record to 6-11, 2-7 in the America East - their worst start since 1993-94... It was the Terriers' lowest scoring output in 33 meetings with the Hawks... BOSTON - Hartford shot 34-of-43 from the free throw line on its way to am 86-78 victory over Boston University... It was the Hartford's first victory on "The Roof" since January 13, 1994... Hartford led, 43-37, at halftime, but B.U. opened the second half with a 12-4 run to take a 49-47 lead after a Ignacio "Nacho" Rodriguez dunk with 15:20 to go... But, that it would be the Terriers' last lead of the contest as the Hawks went on a 13-6 run to take a 60-53 advantage with 10;52 left to go... B.U. did cut the deficit to one, 67-66, on Billy Beal's three-pointer with 5:02 to play, but Hartford hit 11-of-12 free throws in the final five minutes to seal the victory... Jean Avebe led B.U. with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Beal added 12 points, extending his three-point streak to 17 games... LeVar Folk chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds... The Terriers did shoot .800 (20-of-25) from the charity stripe... The loss dropped the Terriers' record at home to 4-8, their worst since 1992-93.
NEWARK, DE - Despite a game-high 19 points from LeVar Folk, eighth-seeded Boston University fell to ninth-seeded Towson, 71-58, in the play-in round of the 1999 America East Championships... It is the first time since 1994 that the Terriers did not reach the semifinals... B.U.'s seven-game winning streak against Towson was also snapped... B.U. held an 11-8 lead at the 10:16 mark of the first half, but Towson used a 12-1 run to take a 20-12 lead with 4:25 to go... Towson led, 28-20, at the break... The Terriers did cut the lead to four, 28-24, after two straight baskets to open the half, but Towson outscored B.U., 21-10, over the next seven minutes to lead, 49-34, with 12:32 remaining... Despite 16 second-half points from Folk, the Terriers could get no closer than 12 the rest of the way... Folk had a team-high three steals and became the first Terrier to record 1,000 points, 500 assists, and 200 steals in a career... Billy Beal added 15 points, including three three-point field goals... Beal finished his career having hit at least one trey in each of his last 18 games.
