Terrier Twelve - #11: Schanda Garners Major PL Award as Softball Surges to PL Final

July 14, 2017

For the 10th straight year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 11 in this year's Terrier Twelve is the softball team surging late to the Patriot League championship round for the third time in four years and Jilee Schanda claiming conference Player of the Year accolades. Moriah Connolly also contributed to the memorable season by breaking a pair of Patriot League records.

The Terriers opened the season with the program's first victory over a ranked squad in five years, a 3-1 win at No. 23 Florida Atlantic, and later pulled out another impressive road non-conference road win at defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton. They were unable though to carry momentum from those wins into the start of the Patriot League play, as they suffered a difficult three-game sweep at PL preseason favorite Lehigh by a combined score of 30-10.

BU used the three losses as a wake-up call and rebounded by winning the final 14 conference games in dominating fashion with the program's first weekend sweeps over Army and Bucknell. Overall, the Terriers went 17-5 in the next 22 games en route to the PL championship round and allowed just 33 earned runs over 157 innings after the Mountain Hawks tallied 29 in 14.2 innings.

Besides making defensive plays in the outfield, the rising senior Schanda provided the spark at the plate to help the Terriers get on the run, as she hit a stellar .461 down the stretch with a .724 slugging percentage. She finished the season batting a team-high .343 (5th - PL) and was honored for her efforts with the program's first Patriot League Player of the Year award, which marked the 11th overall from a conference for BU after Jayme Mask ('14) was honored by the America East in 2013.

In total, six Terriers received All-Conference honorees with recent graduates Makinna Akers, Moriah Connolly and Gabi Martinez all earning recognition. Akers (12-10, 2.08 ERA) was stellar in the circle down the stretch, as she and rising sophomore Kali Magane (13-11, 3.03 ERA) combined for 92 strikeouts and seven shutout wins to help drive the team's resurgence.

As the No. 2 seed, BU began the double-elimination PL tourney with a 6-1 win over Army and then followed up with a 14-7 victory at top-seed Lehigh to avenge the earlier series sweep. The host Mountain Hawks though utilized the home-field advantage and throwing arm of PL Pitcher of the Year Christine Campbell to thwart the Terriers in a pair of hard-fought one-run decisions, 1-0 and 4-3, to clinch the NCAA berth.

Connolly wrapped up her impressive collegiate career as the PL record holder for stolen bases in a season (41) and career (116), which were No. 1 and 2 in the BU record book, respectively. Her 51 runs this season were the second most at BU and third most in the PL. She finished with 225 career hits, the fifth-most ever for the Terriers, and the sixth-highest batting average (.344).
