PYEONGCHANG, South Korea - Former Boston University women's ice hockey standouts Marie-Philip Poulin ('15) and Jenn Wakefield ('12) will play for Olympic gold when Canada faces off against the United States in Wednesday night's gold-medal game. Puck drop is set for 11:10 p.m. ET.
Poulin will become the first Boston University student-athlete to win a medal in three different Olympic Games and can also become the first-ever BU student-athlete to win three Olympic gold medals if Canada is victorious on Wednesday. Wakefield can become the 10th BU student-athlete to claim at least two Olympic medals, and will join Poulin and former Terrier and Canadian teammate Catherine Ward ('12) as the only two-time gold-medal winners in school history.
The duo was instrumental in Canada's 5-0 semifinal win over the Olympic Athletes from Russia on Monday. Wakefield scored her first two goals of the tournament while Poulin added another marker as they staked Canada a 3-0 lead. In four games, Poulin has totaled five points (2g, 3a) and is a plus-5 while Wakefield is a plus-2 in addition to her two goals. Both players have one of Canada's four game-winning goals in the tournament.
Canada defeated the United States, 2-1, in the final game of preliminary play. This is the third straight Olympics in which the two nations have met in the gold-medal game. Poulin scored two goals, including the game-winning marker, in both 2010 and 2014.
