PYEONGCHANG, South Korea - Former Boston University women's ice hockey standouts Marie-Philip Poulin ('15) and Jenn Wakefield ('12) claimed a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games after Canada was edged in a shootout by the United States, 3-2, on Thursday.
Poulin, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, is the first Boston University student-athlete to win a medal in three different Olympic Games. Wakefield is the 10th BU student-athlete to claim at least two Olympic medals, as she was part of the Canada's 2014 squad in Sochi.
It appeared as if Poulin, who had scored the game-winning goals in each of the last two Olympic gold-medal games, would be the hero again when she broke a 1-1 deadlock in the second period. However, the United States evened the score at 13:39 of the third period and eventually clinched the victory in a shootout.
Both Poulin and Wakefield were instrumental in Canada reaching the gold-medal contest. In Monday's semifinal win over the Olympic Athletes from Russia, Wakefield scored her first two goals of the tournament, including the game-winner, while Poulin added another marker as they staked Canada a 3-0 lead.
In five games, Poulin totaled six points (3g, 3a) and was a plus-5 while Wakefield is a plus-2 in addition to her two goals. Both players had one of Canada's four game-winning goals in the tournament.
