The newest piece to BU's athletic campus, New Balance Field opened in September 2013 and serves as the home of BU field hockey.

Made possible in part by a $3 million gift from Boston-based New Balance, the 110,000 square-foot field has seating for 500 and was built above the former Babcock Street parking lot. The field is atop the Langsam Garage with nearly 350 parking spaces.

The $27-million, state-of-the-art structure provided BU's nationally ranked field hockey team with a new on-campus facility after playing its `home' games off-campus since the 2001 season.

The new field essentially doubled BU's playable green space and enabled the department to add men's lacrosse to its collection of varsity teams, as well as to provide practice space for varsity teams and the more than 8,000 students who play intramural and club sports.

The field also features a state-of-the-art watering system that allows the BU coaching staff to start the water cannons by using an app on their cell phones.

Major donors in addition to New Balance included BU overseer William D. Bloom (CGS'82, SMG'84), a former BU rugby player who made the first philanthropic contribution toward the field; Robert S. Trump (DGE'68, CAS'70); C. A. Lance Piccolo (SED'62), chair of the Board of Trustees athletic committee and a former BU football player; Lawrence Cohen (CAS'83) and Judy Cohen; overseer Raymond Killian (SED'59) and Helen Killian; trustee Stuart W. Pratt (CAS'69); trustee Bippy Siegal; and trustee Ronald G. Garriques (ENG'86).
