Men's Crew Bows To Northeastern in Arlett Cup
April 10, 1999 | Men's Rowing
The Terriers' varsity men's heavyweight crew rowed its best race of the season but it was not enough as they bowed to Northeastern in the 22nd annual Arlett Cup on The Charles River on Saturday (April 10th).
In other rowing action against these two arch-rivals, the Terriers' second varsity defeated Northeastern, 6:11.31 to 6:13.9, while the Northeastern freshmen bested B.U., 6:01.63 to 6:04.5.
In the varsity race, the Terriers, who had lost earlier this season to Syracuse and Brown in separate regattas, stayed with the Huskies for the first 1000 meters, but could not keep pace with Northeastern over the final 1000 and lost by a little more than a length. Northeastern was timed in 5:56.7, while the Terriers covered the course in 6:04.5.
"We rowed a great race until the (Massachusetts Avenue) Bridge," said varsity coach Rodney Pratt, as he looked back over the first 1000 meters of the race. "Then, Northeastern made the move, and we couldn't hold on.
"They opened the lead to three-quarters of a length at the MIT boathouse (1500 meters), and pulled away from there. And, we could match them.
"This was the best we have rowed this year for the first 1000 meters, but we have to pull the whole thing together," continued the coach.
Pratt was very pleased with how the second varsity performed en route to its win over the Huskies.
"Northeastern led off the start, but we pulled even at 400 meters," said the coach. "Then, we went up by a couple of seats before they pulled even at 750 meters.
"We then pulled ahead at MIT. Northeastern tried to close the lead over the final 500 meters, but we were in control."
