Crew Rows Past Columbia For First Win Of Season
April 28, 1999 | Men's Rowing
The men's heavyweight crew led from start to finish on Saturday (April 24th) en route to a 7.6-second win over Columbia and the Terriers' first regatta win of the season.
By the time the two crews had reached the 250-meter mark of the 2,000-meter course, B.U. had a one-seat lead. From then to the race's midpoint, the Terriers increased their lead to a seat at each of the next 250 meters. Thus, at the 1,000-mark at the Mass. Ave Bridge, the Terriers held a comfortable four-seat margin.
"It was tough water through the first 1000 meters," said head coach Rodney Pratt. "There were crossing head winds from the Cambridge side of The Charles, and it caused choppy water.
"But, I thought the varsity handled it well, and did a nice job under tough conditions."
The water smoothed out in the second 1000 meters, but, by then, the Terriers had the race under control as they headed to the victory.
"We really needed this win," said the coach. "We have been working very hard, and it was good for our confidence heading into this weekend's action."
On Saturday, the Terriers host Yale, while they come back on Sunday to row against Wisconsin.
The Terriers also dominated the first freshman race, outrowing Columbia, 6:44.31 to 7:14.64.
Columbia did not have a boat for a second varsity race.
