Men's Rowing Wraps Second Day at IRA National Championship Regatta
May 30, 2026 | Men's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Two first-place finishes and two placements into the Petite Finals highlighted the Boston University men's rowing program's second day at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Saturday (May 30) at Lake Natoma.
BU's Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 moved on to the Petite Final after competing in the AB semifinals. The Terrier Second Varsity 8 secured the victory in the CD semifinal to reach the C final. In the Varsity 4 B final, BU won a photo finish to place seventh overall in the nation.
Calm waters, minimal wind and clear skies greeted rowers in the morning. Temperatures climbed past 70 degrees as the morning waned.
BU's Varsity 8, coxed by Emily Slawin and stroked by Alessandro Gardino, ignited the day in the AB semifinal with a quick burst off the starting line to apply pressure to the other crews in the opening 500 meters. Settling into a battle with Brown, the Terriers finished sixth at 5:50.13 to earn a spot into the Petite Final.
Up next was the AB semifinal for the Third Varsity 8, coxed by Ben Brinckerhoff and stroked by Liam Feeney. Engaged with a tight matchup against Stanford from the starboard side, BU trailed early before making up ground in the middle half of the race. A strong final sprint pushed the Terriers over the Cardinal by a few seats, clocking in at 5:56.36 to move to the Petite Final.
The Terrier Second Varsity 8, coxed by Luke Stroh and stroked by Griffith Coupland, built a substantial margin in Lane 2 with Drexel over the rest of the field in the CD semifinal. The Dragons still pulled within one-half length on BU, but the Terriers held serve through the entire portion of the race to win with a time of 5:56.71, posting the fastest time of any crew in the CD semifinals to advance to the C final.
Saturday wrapped up with the Varsity 4, coxed by Hannah Noguchi and stroked by Mason Laundry, in the B final. Northeastern took the early lead out of Lane 2, but the Terriers overtook them past the midpoint of the race for first. Syracuse mounted a furious charge in the last 250 meters to create a photo finish, but the Terriers triumphed in 6:35.48, 44-hundreths in front of the Orange, for the win. That places the crew seventh overall among the Varsity 4 boats.
The IRA National Championship Regatta concludes on Sunday (May 31). The Second Varsity 8 competes in the C final at 9:22 a.m. PT while the Third Varsity 8 and Varsity 8 participate in their respective Petite Finals.
