November 3, 2000 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON, MA (November 3) -- Freshman forward Jason Grochowalski (Shrewsbury, MA) scored a game-high 28 points on 9-for-13 shooting to lead the Boston University men's basketball team to an 86-71 win over the Citizens Bank All-Stars in the team's opening exhibition game of the season.
Sophomore Paul Seymour (Liverpool, NY), the 1999-2000 America East Rookie of the Year, added 22 points and a team-high eight rebounds to pace the Terriers.
Seymour hit a three-pointer with 21 seconds left in the first half to pull the Terriers even, 41-41 at the break. From that point, B.U. went on a 32-8 run until 5:15 left in the game to take a 73-49 lead and effectively put the game away. Grochowalski, who redshirted last season after a shoulder injury, scored 17 points during the run to fuel the Terrier attack.
There were several new faces in the Terrier lineup last night. Junior co-captain Stijn Dhondt (Borem, Belgium), who sat out last season as a transfer from Cuesta College, scored nine points in 18 minutes of action.
Three other freshman saw time last night for B.U. Center Ryan Butt (Lancaster, PA) had eight points and connected on a pair of three-pointers. Kevin Fitzgerald (Belle Harbor, NY) scored four points, including a nice drive past Danta Johnson midway through the first half to put the Terriers up 22-18. Derrick Breland (Silver Spring, MD) logged 31 minutes at the point and scored two points with four steals and three assists.
As a team, the Terriers shot 50 percent (32-for-64) for the game. They limited Citizens Bank to just 36.8 percent (25-for-68) shooting from the field. The Terriers also outrebounded their opponent, 45-38.
B.U.'s next exhibition game is Saturday, November 11 at 1 p.m. against the Nantucket Nectars on "The Roof."
