December 29, 2000 | Women's Basketball
BOSTON -- Senior center Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) scored a game-high 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting and the Terriers hit 10 free throws in the final three minutes to defeat Wagner College, 61-55, at "The Roof" on Friday. Sophomore guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) added 14 points for the Terriers, who improve to 5-6 on the season. Wagner drops to 3-8.
The Terriers jumped out to a quick 17-6 lead after Argentieri hit a three-pointer 6:14 into the game, but Wagner was able to battle back with a 13-0 run to take a 19-17 lead on a layup by Whitney Wade (four points).
Each school exchanged brief leads before Dixon's jumper put B.U. up 28-24 with 3:49 left in the half. The Terriers led 28-26 at the break. Wagner, which was 1-for-2 from the line, had the only free throw attempts of the first half.
The Terriers built a seven-point cushion early in the second half after a Lashaunda Mitchell (Oyster Bay, NY) layup gave B.U. a 39-32 edge, but Wagner again pulled even and took a 47-45 lead after a layup by Ashley Linscott.
Argentieri's layup with four minutes to go gave B.U. the lead for good, 49-47. Argentieri, Annie Tomasini (Boston, MA), Courtney Jones (Lafayette Hill, PA), and Ashley Carr (Milwaukee, WI) all hit a pair of clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the game for B.U.
Wagner was led by Kim McGhee and Jill Watral, who each had 11 points. Dixon added seven rebounds and three blocks, while Tomasini had eight points, five assists and a pair of steals.
B.U. next faces Harvard at home on January 2 at 7 p.m.
