No. 3 Delaware - (22-6, 14-4) Delaware leads the all-time series, 13-10, and has won the last five games. The series is 1-1 in America East Championship action. The Blue Hens captured the 1998 Championship Game on March 7, 66-58. Delaware won the last meeting, 87-77, on February 10, 2000, at the Bob Carpenter Center. It's A 40-Minute Game In two of its last five games, B.U. has proved that college basketball is a 40-minute game. In the first half at Northeastern on February 15th, the Terriers shot 27.3 percent from the field (6-of-22) and committed 12 turnovers en route to a 28-15 halftime deficit. The second half was an entirely different story as the Terriers shot a season-high 61.1 percent for a half (11-of-18) and scored 43 points, committing just six turnovers.. B.U.,'s 15 points at halftime were its lowest first half output since scoring 15 at Delaware on January 11, 1996... On Thursday, at New Hampshire, B.U. trailed 51-36 with 9:51 to go in the game, but outscored the Wildcats 24-7 the rest way en route to the 60-58 win.
Defensive Minded Defense has been a cornerstone in the Dennis Wolff era... In Wolff's five-plus seasons, B.U. has a 73-31 mark when holding opponents under 70 points... On Saturday, January 8th vs. Northeastern, the Terriers held the Huskies to an opponent season-low of 45 points and 29.5 percent shooting (18-of-61)... Head Coach Dennis Wolff Head coach Dennis Wolff is in his sixth season at Boston University and sports an 92-81 record (.531 pct.)... From Terriers To Greyhounds Trailing 28-11 with 2:26 to play in the first half at Northeastern on February 15th, the Terriers scored 23 unanswered points through the 12:03 mark of the second half for a 23-0 run. The run was B.U.'s largest of the year, besting its 21-5 run against the Huskies on January 8th. Freshman forward Paul Seymour scored 11 of his team-high 17 points during the run, including a key three-pointer to break a 28-28 tie and give the Terriers the lead for good.
Down The Wire Dennis Wolff's Terriers have played nine games this winter decided by four points or less. The Terriers are 3-6 in those games. In these tightly-contested games, B.U. is shooting 41.6 percent from field, 36.9 from three-point territory, and 68.3 from the free throw line. The Terriers are outrebounding their foes 36.8 rpg to 35.0 rpg. Opponents, however, are averaging 21.2 free throw attempts per game to B.U.'s 13.6 free throw attempts per game. Heading into the America East Championships, Costello needs 12 three-pointers to break Mark Daly's (92) record of 202...With 11:48 to go in the game at Drexel on Tuesday, January 4th, Costello connected on his 164th career three-point field goal to surpass Billy Beal's (99) total of 163 for second place.
Three-Point Specialist Mike Costello has scored 803 career points, 576 of which have come via the three-point field goal therefore, 71.7 percent of his career points have come from beyond the three-point arc.
Seymour Among America East's All-Time Freshman Bombers Paul Seymour has 66 three-point field goals and has raised his scoring average to 11.8 ppg, the highest average for a Terrier rookie since Tunji Awojobi averaged 18.9 ppg at the end of his freshman season in 1993-94. The 6-5 shooting guard has now converted 66 3pt-field goals on the season. His 66 long range jumpers are the most in a season by a Terrier since Billy Beal ('99) connected on 67 three's during the 1997-98 season, and the most by a freshman in America East history since Delaware's John Gordon made 72 three's four seasons ago.
Third Time Is A Charm Three times this season freshman guard Paul Seymour has made six three-point field goals in a game... Most recently, the America East Rookie of the Year , knocked down six en route to a career-high 24 points at New Hampshrie on February 24th... The win marked the first time this season that the Terriers have won when Seymour has connected on six three-pointers... The first time Seymour made six three's came on November 22nd, when Seymour scored all of his then career-high 18 points from three-point land in a 91-79 overtime loss at James Madison ... Seymour connected on a career-high 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.. . His six three-point field goals were the most by a Terrier since Billy Beal made 7 on January 12, 1999 vs. New Hampshire... More From Three-Point Territory Seymour and Costello are closing in on Billy Beal ('99) and Costello as the most potent three-point tandem in B.U. history. Beal and Costello converted 124-of-326 three-pointers during the 1997-98 season. Currently, Seymour and Costello have converted 120-of-326 and are on pace to finish with 124-of-338.
Balanced Attack On February 10th at Delaware, the Terriers had five players reach double-figures in scoring... Jean Avebe led the way with 19 points, followed by Jacob Kudlacz with 14 points, Dereck Franklin with 13 points, and Paul Seymour and Mike Costello with 10 points apiece... It was the second time this season that the Terriers had five players score double-figures in a game... Avebe Playing In His 104th Career Game Senior forward Jean Avebe is playing in his 104th career game versus Northeastern. He ranks 22nd on the Terriers' all-time games played list... Avebe is the 23rd player in Boston University men's basketball history to play in 100 games. Avebe joins teammate Mike Costello, who reached the plateau at Hartford on January 21st. Avebe and Costello are the fourth and fifth players to have appeared in 100 games since Dennis Wolff took over coaching duties six years ago.
Youngest Terrier Squad in School History With only two upperclassmen on its 13-man roster, this year's Boston University team is the youngest in school history. The Terriers graduated five seniors from last year's club, leaving them with two seniors and 10 underclassmen for the 1999-2000 season. Every previous Boston University team has fielded at least four upperclassmen, while no Terrier club has featured more than nine underclassmen. Joe Tompkins Tribute A long-time Boston University employee, he was a great friend of all Boston University athletes, and a special friend the Boston University basketball team... This season, the Boston University men's basketball team will be wearing black -bands in tribute... Joe died suddenly at work on Tuesday, July 13, 1999.
