Crews Open Season With Sweep
March 30, 2000 | Women's Rowing
The Terrier women's crews opened their 2000 regatta season on a successful note as all six boats rowed to wins over UMass and New Hampshire on the Charles River on Saturday (March 25th). Rowing under excellent conditions, the women were victorious in the first and second varsities, the first, second, and third novices, and the third varsity four.
"It was a good start for our crews," said head varsity coach Holly Hatton. "For the opener, everything went well across the board."
In the first varsity race, the Terriers overcame an "unnerving start" according to Hatton, and a subpar first 1000 meters to defeat UMass by nine seconds, 6:32.5 to 6:41.7. New Hampshire was a distant third in 7:01.5.
"There was a problem with the stake boats at the beginning of the race, and it was an unnerving start for us," said the coach. "We didn't row well in the first 1000. In fact, we were about a seat or two behind UMass at that point. Then, we finally got into the rhythm and moved away in the second half of the race," Hatton went on. "It may have been the first-race jitters, but they hung in there, and responded."
In the second varsity, the Terriers outrowed UMass, 7:00.6 to 7:06.5. New Hampshire did not have a boat entered. "Our boat moved away in the last 500 meters," said Hatton. "That boat still hasn't jelled, and we are still looking for a lineup that will mesh."
The first novice boat turned in the most impressive winning margin, as they were timed in 6:52.4. UNH was timed in 7:21.4, and UMass covered the 2000 meters in 7:24.8
"We have a great freshman team," boasted Hatton. "We have three full 8's, and very few programs have that many rowers on the freshman boat. So, we also have depth."
In the other races, the third varsity four B.U. A boat was timed in 7:28.1, while the B.U. B boat turned in a 7:49.8. UMass was clocked in 7:59.6, and UNH had an 8:05.9.
The second novice bested UMass, 7:17.5 to 7:40.7, while UNH had an 8:02.0. Finally, the third novice beat UMass, 7:25.2 to 7:49.4. UNH did not have a boat.
"Overall, I was pleased with how the season started," said Hatton. "Each week, we have to improve, because our competition will get better each week."
The Terriers' next race will be on April 1st when they host Syracuse and the University of Miami. The first varsity race is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
