Terriers Close Out Season At IRAs
June 14, 2000 | Men's Rowing
The men's crew closed out the 2000 rowing season on June 1-3 when it sent six boats to the IRA Championships on The Cooper River in Camden, NJ. Of the boats, the second varsity fared the best as it finished second to Navy in the Petites.
"Overall, it has been a disappointing season for the varsity," summed up head coach Rodney Pratt. "Certainly, the highlight was beating Northeastern to win the Arlett Cup.
"After that, we never got faster," said the coach. "I think part of the problem was illness. It seemed that we never had enough time together as one boat because there always seemed to be someone out of the lineup with illness.
"Because of that, it was hard to maintain a consistency," Pratt went on. "We never hit our stride after Northeastern because we never had enough time to put a solid boat together."
At the IRA Championships, the varsity heavyweight boat defeated Purdue and Rutgers to win the 4th level finals. The Terriers were clocked in 5:59.72, while the Boilermakers covered the 2000-meter course in 6:03.63 and the Scarlet Knights were timed in 6:05.25.
The varsity boat opened its competition by finishing third in its first heat when it finished behind Brown (5:43.70) and Northeastern (5:47.90) as the Terriers were clocked in 5:51.90.
Then, in the repechage, they finished fourth with a time of 5:49.02. Dartmouth won the heat in 5:42.68, followed by Cornell, 5:45.38, and Michigan, 5:47.41.
