The B.U. women's crew team opened their Fall 2001 campaign at the Head of the Ohio and Head of the Connecticut regattas last weekend (Oct. 6-7).
In the Open Pairs at the Head of the Ohio, the top three B.U. boats finished 2-3-4 in the 15-team competition. B.U. also took 12th and 14th place in the race.
"All five boats got across the finish line afloat, which was really an accomplishment," said head coach Holly Hatton. "It was really rough water and tough conditions."
Finishing in first place in the Open Doubles race were juniors Kat Haimes and Freddie Garnier.
The Terrier squad of sophomores Kara Eiber, Yael Erliztz, Rachel Heckl and juniors Abbey Drake and Deirdre Browne took first place in the Open Four event.
The B.U. Varsity Eight boat took third among tough competition that including top programs Ohio State and Michigan State, finishing in a time of 14:33.1 and ahead of Texas and Michigan.
"What was most impressive about this race was that everyone had already raced during the day, and were going against teams with fresh athletes," said Hatton on the Varsity Eight Race.
The Terrier Varsity "B" Team competed at the Head of the Connecticut Regatta, with boats finishing in sixth place in the Open Four Race and 13th in the Open Eight Race.
"All in all, this weekend was a real good showing," said Hatton. "We're out trying to build a technically strong team so that in the spring we can be in the hunt for an NCAA bid."
The Terriers will next race on their home turf at the Head of the Charles Regatta on October 21st and 22nd.
