Coach "Not Disappointed" in Women's Crew Opener
March 31, 2001 | Women's Rowing
BOSTON -- The Terrier women's crew was edged by Syracuse in its season opener on The Charles River on Saturday (March 31st), but head coach Holly Hatton was generally pleased with the overall performance of her varsity boat.
"I am not disappointed at all," the coach said after Syracuse edged her varsity, 6:45.1 to 6:46.9.
The University of Texas finished third in 6:54.9, while Duke, which also made the trek to Cambridge, was third in 7:04.9.
"The weather conditions in the area have been terrible," said Hatton. "In fact, during the recent spring break, it was so bad that we could get on the water just three times.
"This was just the first time all spring that we have rowed 2000 meters," continued the coach.
The Terriers did not get off to a good start, and trailed by an open length by the halfway mark of the race.
Then, in the third 500, they began to make up ground and closed with a sprint that left them just 1.8 seconds behind Syracuse.
"The training we have been putting in really paid off," said Hatton. "That was a very good Syracuse boat we went against today. They are going to win a lot of races this spring. Last fall, they finished sixth at the Head of the Charles, while we finished 10th.
"There are some things we have to work on," said the coach. "We didn't get off to a good start so we will spend time on that.
"We just have some things to dust off. In general, I was very pleased with our first race of the spring."
In other races, the Terriers finished second to Syracuse in the second varsity, 7:13.6 to 7:24.29. Texas was third in 7:24.85, while Duke was fourth in 7:30.6. Finally, in the first novice race, the Terriers rowed in a winning time of 7:13.0. Texas was second, and Syracuse was third. No times were available for either boat. Duke was not entered in the event.
