Terriers Lose To Yale, Beat Dartmouth In Cup Race
April 13, 2001 | Women's Rowing

The Terrier women's heavyweight crew made its first Charles River appearance of the spring season on Saturday (April 13th) and came away with mixed results as it lost to the nation's fifth-ranked Yale boat but beat unranked Dartmouth.
Yale, which improved to 6-0 on the young season, rowed off with the Class of '85 Cup as it showed why it is such a highly-touted crew. From the start, the Elis led and never looked back as they covered the 2000-meter course in 7:30.7. In the meantime, the Terriers, who are now 4-2 this season, rowed in 7:43.8, while Dartmouth, which saw its record slip to 4-4, finished in 8:03.0
The conditions were almost unrowable, as there was a headwind that gusted up to 16 miles per hour leaving the water choppy.
Terrier head coach Holly Hatton, though, put the rowing conditions and the quality of the Yale boat aside as she expressed disappointment in how her varsity crew rowed.
"I wish there were something positive I could say about today," said the coach. "We were flat and uninspired. There was no enthusiasm out there. But, that's the way we have been practicing. We are rowing like we are practicing.
"I made a lineup change and went with a different stroke, but it didn't make any difference in how we rowed."
The Terriers also trailed in the second varsity and first novice races, as Yale swept all three races.
In the novice race, Yale prevailed over Dartmouth, 9:43.7 to 9:56.8. The Terriers were third in 10:19.5.
With that race over, the decision was made that the conditions at the starting line were too poor and the start was moved up to the Massachusetts Avenue bridge, which is approximately 1000 meters into the regular 2000-meter course. The finish line was also moved forward about 500 meters. Thus, the second varsity race covered approximately 1500 meters. The distance didn't matter as Yale again prevailed. Their time was 4:57.3, while the Terriers were second in 5:08.8 and Dartmouth was third in 6:16.2.
