Terriers Lose Arlett Cup To Northeastern
April 14, 2001 | Men's Rowing
The Terrier men's crew rowed very well for the first 1000 meters only to give in to a strong head wind and a bigger Northeastern crew in losing to the Huskies in the Arlett Cup on The Charles River on Saturday (April 14th).
The Terriers are now 0-3 on the season having lost to Syracuse and Brown earlier this year. For Northeastern, it marked its first race of the spring season.
The Huskies, who have won the Arlett Cup 18 times, were clocked in 6:26.87 over the 2000-meter course, while the Terriers, who won the Cup last year, finished in 6:45.76.
“I was very pleased with how we rowed the first 1000 meters,” said Terrier head coach Rodney Pratt. “We had a nice, clean start, and we were pretty much with them until the (Mass. Ave.) Bridge. “
At that point, we wabbled a bit, and we were never able to recover,” the coach went on.
The two crews stayed pretty much together through the first 300 meters. At that point, the Huskies made a push and took a lead of about four seats.
By the 750-meter mark, the lead was up to a length.
“They made a push at 300 meters, and we let them slip away a bit,” said Pratt.
The key point was at the Bridge where “we lost a chunk,” according to Pratt. “
The water wasn’t great, but both boats had to row in it,” said the coach. “They are just bigger and stronger than we are, but we are still building.”
Northeastern also won the second varsity and first freshmen races.
In the second varsity race, the Huskies finished in 6:51.23, while the Terriers crossed the finish line in 7:01.64.
Finally, in the first freshman race, it was Northeastern in 6:35.07 to the Terriers’ 6:55.81.
