The Terrier men's crew lost its second Cup of the season on Saturday (April 7th) as one of the nation's top-ranked crews, Brown University, rowed to the win for the Michalson Cup. The Bears were timed in 5:46.3, while the Terriers covered the 2000-meter course in 6:07.3.
Last Saturday (March 31st), the Terriers lost the Conlan Cup to Syracuse in the team's season opener.
Rowing on The Charles River with the benefit of a tailwind and calm water, Brown led from start to finish on Saturday morning en route to a 21-second win over the Terriers.
The Bruins continue to show they are one of the top men's heavyweight crews not just in the East but in the nation. Last year, their varsity boat won the Eastern Sprints and finished second at the NCAAs. No less than five rowers are back from that team including Olympian Dave Simon. Brown picked up last Sunday (April 1st) where they left off last year as it defeated Syracuse by a margin of 13 seconds. In the meantime, the day before, B.U. had lost to Syracuse by nearly eight seconds.
Terrier head coach Rodney Pratt felt his team had showed improvement over its season opener.
"I have seen some progress between last week and this week," the coach said in the aftermath of the loss to Brown.
"During the week, we made some changes in how we were rowing technically," said Pratt. "And, I could see today that we had made some improvements.
"It is going to take time for the guys to feel comfortable with these changes," continued the coach. "But, there is a real positive attitude on our team this year. The guys want to get better, and I haven't seen that attitude on the team in quite some time.
"Brown has a powerful boat again," Pratt pointed out. "But, we are rowing better."
The Bears also won the second varsity and first freshman races, as each of their crews bettered the 6:00-minute mark.
In the second varsity race, Brown was timed in 5:57, while the Terriers covered the course in 6:20.2 In the first freshman race, Brown finished in 5:55.6, while B.U. was clocked in 6:17.1
