November 12, 2002 | Women's Basketball

BOSTON - Following a second-place finish in the conference standings last season, the Boston University women's basketball team is picked to finish second in the America East by the conference's head coaches in a poll released Tuesday (Nov. 12). The Terriers garnered one first-place vote and trailed number-one pick Vermont by 12 points.
In addition, junior guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ), who led the league in scoring last season averaging 18.6 points per game, was one of three unanimous selections to the pre-season All-Conference team.
Terhune is one of five Terrier starters and nine letterwinners returning from the 2001-02 squad that compiled a 17-11 overall record, the first winning season in seven years and first in the three-year tenure of head coach Margaret McKeon.
Vermont, which finished the 2001-02 regular season with a 23-9 overall record and an appearance in the WNIT, received seven of a possible eight first-place votes. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own team. The Catamounts finished with 63 total votes. Vermont had two pre-season All-Conference picks in senior Morgan Hall and junior Aaron Yantzi.
Hartford, the defending America East Champion, received the other first-place vote and 29 total points.
Maine, led by unanimous pre-season All-Conference pick Heather Ernest, followed B.U. in third place with 53 points. New Hampshire finished in fourth with 36 points, followed by Stony Brook, led by unanimous pre-season All-Conference pick Sherry Jordan in fifth with 31 points, and Hartford in sixth with 29 points. Binghamton (7th, 26 points), Northeastern (8th, 21 points), and Albany (9th, 10 points) round out the field.
