Men's Crew Continues Improvement Vs. Brown
April 6, 2002 | Men's Rowing
The Terrier men's varsity heavyweight crew, showing that it is considerably better than its early-season record would indicate, gave host Brown a battle on Saturday (April 6th) before losing to the Bruins in the Michalson Cup. Rowing on the choppy Seekonk River, Brown was timed in 5:50.7, while the Terriers were clocked in 5:55.1
The loss dropped the Terriers' spring record to 0-2 as they lost to Syracuse the week before, 6:13.6 to 6:14.7.
As was the case in their opener against Syracuse, B.U. put on a valiant effort against Brown, which has been one of the nation's premier varsity crews in recent years.
"We have been rowing better," noted Terrier head coach Rodney Pratt. "I think we are on track for a good season, but we still have a lot of work to do before we get to the Sprints and the IRAs."
Against Brown, the Terriers battled hard through the first 1000 meters as only three seats separated the two crews. At that point, Brown put on a power 10 which enabled the Bruins to open their lead to a boat length.
"It was at that point, in the third 500, that they squeezed ahead of us," said Pratt. "They did everything they could to get away from us, but we hung in there. That's been the way we have rowed thus far. There is good spirit in this boat, and there is a great attitude."
Brown also won the second varsity and first freshman races.
In the second varsity, the Bruins rowed in 6:11.1, while the Terriers were timed in 6:26.8.
B.U.'s first freshmen also did an outstanding job for the second straight week. After defeating Syracuse by 15.5 seconds in their opener the week before, the Terriers gave Brown all it could handle albeit in a losing effort. The Bruins were timed in 6:12.7, while the Terriers rowed in 6:18.6.
"Even though we lost, we showed improvement over the week before," freshman coach Dave LeFebrve said. "Brown thought they were going to have an easy time of it, but we gave them everything we had. It was a harder row than they thought it would be."
