The Terrier men's heavyweight varsity crew, ranked number 17, lost to third-ranked Wisconsin but beat MIT on Sunday (May 4th) in the annual Jablonic Cup race held on the Badgers' Lake Mendota.
It marked the eighth straight year the Badgers have won the Cup, which is named after the former legendary Wisconsin coach Randall Jablonic.
With a stiff headwind and temperatures hovering the low 50s, Wisconsin's varsity crew covered the 2000-meter course in 6:11.9, while the Terriers finished in 6:29.9, and MIT was third in 7:06.2. Both the Badgers and Terriers were close through the first 500 meters, but Wisconsin, with its bigger crew, was able to handle the headwind better and moved away in the middle 1000 meters en route to the win.
The Badgers also won the second varsity and first freshman races. In the former, they defeated the Terriers easily, 6:21.1 to 6:44.9, while the differential was 14 seconds in the latter, 6:36.0 to 6:50.5.
