The Terrier men's crews closed out their season over the weekend (May 30-June 1) at the 100th running of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. More than 1,100 oarsmen from over 60 colleges and universities competed in the event, which is the oldest rowing championship in the country.
In the men's premier event, the varsity eight, the Terriers finished fifth in the third level finals, or 17th overall with a time of 5:45.3. Stanford won the third level finials in 5:39.5, followed by Dartmouth (5:41.9), Marist (5:43.8), and Brown (5:43.9). Georgetown rounded out the six-team heat (5.45.9).
"I thought we rowed very well," said Terrier head coach Rodney Pratt. "Our goal was to improve each week, and the fact that we lost to Brown by just 1.4 seconds show just how far we came during the season."
Earlier, during the spring dual-regatta season, the Terriers lost to Brown by 4.4 seconds.
Actually, the Terriers had closed the gap between Brown to just three tenths of a second, and it came in a semifinal heat at the IRAs. Rowing in a heat with Brown, Marist, Colgate, Columbia, and Rutgers, the Terriers finished just three tenths of a second behind Brown, 5:45.3 to 5:45.6.
In the first heat of the IRAs that were held on May 30th, the Terriers finished fifth in 6:03.1. Northeastern, which went on to finish second in the petites, or eighth overall, won the initial heat in 5:43.0. Next, in order came Dowling (5:45.4), Princeton (5:59.0), and Syracuse (6:01.1).
By virtue of their heat finish, the Terriers qualified for the repechage where they finished fourth, just one-tenth of a second behind Stanford, 5:43.7 to 5:43.8. Cornell won the heat in 5:40.5, while Michigan was second in 5:41.4. Then came Stanford, the Terriers, and Columbia (6:01.0).
The Terriers followed their rep performance with their efforts in the semifinals and third-level finals.
For the fourth straight year, the University of California captured the grand finals in 5:26.8 over the 2,000-meter course, while Wisconsin was second in 5:28.3.
"If you took a look at our time in the reps, and put it against the times in some of the other rep heats, we would have finished second instead of fourth," pointed out Pratt. "That would have put us in a faster semis and we might have advanced to the grand finals.
"At the end of the regatta, (former Northeastern coach) Buzz Congram came up to me and congratulated me on how our crew improved during the season, which I thought was very nice of him.
"I really enjoyed coaching the crew this year," said Pratt. "They always tried to improve, and, as a coach, you can't expect any more from your team."
The Terriers also had crews entered in the men's freshman eights, the varsity four with and without cox, the men's open four with cox, and the men's freshman four with cox.
In the freshman heavyweight event, the Terriers finished third in the petites or ninth overall. Cornell won the petites in 5:46.08, while Northeastern was second in 5:46.17. The Terriers were clocked in 5:49.87, followed by Oregon State (5:51.34), Rutgers (5:57.90), and Brown (5:59.71).
Earlier in the competition, the Terriers were third in their heat, second in their rep and sixth in their semifinals. Their best time in the competition was their 5:49.87 in the petites, while they rowed a 5:59.27 in their initial heat, 5:49.97 in their rep, and 5:57.35 in their semifinal.
In the men's open four with cox, the Terriers did not advance past their semifinal heat. They were sixth in their first heat in 7:27.18, fourth in their rep in 7:22.43, and fifth in the semifinals in 7:11.80.
In the men's varsity four with cox, the Terriers finished fourth, or 10th overall in 6:34.2. In its initial row, B.U. was fourth in its heat in 6:45.4. The Terriers came back to win its rep in 6:27.6. Then came a fifth-place finish in the semifinals with a 6:41.9 followed by their place in the petites.
In the men's varsity four without cox, the Terriers finished fifth in the third level finals or 17th overall in 6:38.5. They were fifth in their first heat in 6:50.8 and fifth in their rep in 6:44.2 prior to the third level finals.
Finally, in the men's four with cox, the Terriers were fourth in the petites in 6:43.43. They were sixth in their initial heat in 7:04.36 and third in their rep in 6:54.39.
