Men's Basketball Opens Season With Exhibition Win

November 8, 2003

BOSTON - Junior forward Rashad Bell (Queens, N. Y.) had team highs of 15 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Boston University men's basketball team to a 70-52 exhibition victory over the One On One All-Stars at Case Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 8. It was the Terriers' first game action of the season.

One on One got out in front early in the game, opening up a 16-9 advantage on a Keith Holden layup with 12:18 to go, capping a 6-0 run. The Terriers went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 16-16 on layups by sophomore guard Shaun Wynn (Brooklyn, N. Y.), senior forward Ryan Butt (Lancaster, Pa.), and a three-pointer by senior guard Kevin Fitzgerald (Belle Harbor, N. Y.).

B. U. went up for the first time, 21-20, with 5:54 left in the half on a three-pointer by freshman guard Pat Martin (Springfield, Mass.). The game was tied, 29-29, at the intermission.

The Terrier defense picked up the pace in the second half, as One On One managed only seven points in the first 16 minutes of the second period. Junior guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, Conn.) sparked a 30-7 B. U. run, scoring nine points in a four-minute stretch as the Terriers claimed a 59-36 advantage with 4:03 remaining.

One On One's Erin Herring hit three three-pointers in the final 1:44 to cut eight points off the lead, but it wasn't enough.

"I was very happy with the play of the freshman," said Terrier head coach Dennis Wolff, who is starting his 10th season at B. U. "In the second half, we got a lot of dribble penetration and they [One on One] couldn't handle it."

In 28 minutes of action, Martin went 3-for-5 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the three-point line for eight points. He added five assists and three steals. Freshman forward Etienne Brower (West Hempstead, N. Y.) went 2-for-3 from the field for four points and two rebounds.

"We were unselfish and everyone showed some good things," continued the coach. "But we clearly have to show more in the future."

The Terriers had five players score seven-or-more points. In addition to Bell's 15-point effort and Martin's eight points, Carr finished with nine points, while Wynn and sophomore center Matt Czaplinski (Stratford, Conn.) both had seven points off the bench.

B. U. shot 43.7 percent from the field, while One on One shot 32.7 percent. One on One was led by Herring's game-high 24-point performance. He was 6-for-8 from behind the arc.

B. U. opens its regular-season with a game at Holy Cross on Saturday, Nov. 22 in Worcester, Mass. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
