Terriers Hit 13 Three-Pointers To Stop Binghamton, 85-83
February 9, 2003 | Men's Basketball
The Terriers' 13 three-pointers was one shy of their team record of 14, set earlier this season in an 84-69 win over Florida State.
With the game tied at 8-8 with 5:07 elapsed, Boston University (14-7, 9-1 America East) got three consecutive three-pointers from senior forward Billy Collins (Concord, N. H.), sophomore forward Rashad Bell (Queens, N. Y.), and junior guard Matt Turner (West Haven, Conn.) to take a 17-8 advantage.
Later in the half, the Terriers again hit three straight from behind the arc, as Turner hit a pair of long treys and Bell added his third three-pointer to give the Terriers a 34-20 lead with 6:02 to go. The lead grew to 20 points at 41-21 with 2:21 remaining in the half on a turnaround jumper by senior guard Paul Seymour (Liverpool, N. Y.). Binghamton (11-10, 6-5 America East) scored the last seven points of the half to cut the lead to 41-28 at the half.
The Bearcats further cut into the Terriers' lead in the first minute and a half of the second half, as Anthony Green connected on a jumper and a three-pointer, and Brandon Carter got a dunk after a Terrier turnover to make the score 41-35 and cap a 14-0 run. Collins ended the run with the Terriers' ninth trey of the game to build the lead back to nine points at 44-35.
Binghamton trailed by 12 points, 76-64, with 2:12 left, but Green scored six points on a pair of baskets and two free throws as the Bearcats cut the lead to just three points after a trey by Billy Williams with four seconds left. The Terriers' sophomore guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, Conn.) then missed two free throws with 2.2 seconds left, but the Bearcats could not get up a potential game-tying shot.
In addition to Butt's 18 points, which was one point shy of his career high of 19, five other Terriers scored 10 points or more. Butt tied his career-high with his trio of three-pointers, while Bell set a career-high for both three-pointers made and attempted with his 3-for-5 effort.
Green led Binghamton with 20 points. Nick Billings was two rebounds shy of a triple-double with 19 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high 10 blocked shots.
The Terriers outrebounded the Bearcats, 41-28.
The Terriers next travel to Stony Brook, N. Y. on Tuesday, Feb. 11 to face the Stony Brook University Seawolves in a 7 p.m. game.
