Terriers Lose To Northeastern In 26th Annual Arlett Cup
April 12, 2003 | Men's Rowing
The Terrier men's varsity heavyweight crew spotted Northeastern a lead from the outset that it could never regain and lost to the Huskies by a little more than six seconds in the 26th annual Arlett Cup that was rowed on a rainy Charles River on Saturday morning (April 23rd).
Northeastern was timed in 6:03.11 over the 2,000-meter course, while the Terriers covered the distance in 6:09.49.
For B.U., it marked its final appearance on the Charles River this spring season, as the rest of the Terriers' regattas will be on the road.
On a positive note, the Terrier second varsity came away with a win over the Huskies, 6:16.60 to 6:18.22.
Northeastern won the first freshman race in 6:19.84 to the Terriers' 6:26.81.
"We have raced three times this year, and, in each case, we have given the other crew a lead after the first 500 meters," Terrier head coach Rodney Pratt said after the race. "We were able to come back from that and beat Syracuse two weeks ago, but we couldn't do it against Brown last week or Northeastern today.
"We have to concentrate on staying in contact with the other crew," the coach continued.
It didn't help the Terriers' chances against Northeastern when Jaxon Rudduck broke his hand in a non-rowing related event earlier this year. Rudduck did not let the injury keep him from rowing against the Huskies, however.
"He is a tough kid," said Pratt.
In Saturday's varsity race against the Huskies, Northeastern jumped to a lead off the start. The lead reached a length by 500 meters and went to open water by the 750-meter mark. By the time the race passed the MIT boathouse the Huskies led by three lengths and that's the way it remained for the final 500 meters.
"I was very pleased with how the second varsity rowed," said the coach. "They did a nice job.
"But, as far as the varsity is concerned, we are in the long plan," Pratt concluded. "We are gearing ourselves for the Eastern Sprints and the IRAs."
