Men Rowers Sweep Columbia On Harlem River
April 26, 2003 | Men's Rowing
The Terrier men's crew overcame miserable rowing conditions and a quick start by Columbia en route to a win in the varsity heavyweight race held on Saturday (April 26th) on the Harlam River. The win completed a sweep of the regatta for the Terriers. It was the first regatta win for the Terrier heavyweight crew since they opened the spring season with a victory over Syracuse. Since then, B.U. finished second to Brown and to Northeastern in dual regattas and third to Dartmouth and Rutgers in a triangular regatta.
Rowing in rainy, cold, and windy conditions, the varsity covered the 2000-meter course in 6:07.0, while Columbia was timed in 6:10.0.
The second varsity enjoyed the biggest margin of win as it defeated Columbia, in Henley terminology, "easily." The Terriers were timed in 6:05.54 to 6:32.76, a margin of better than six lengths. At the famed regatta in on the Thames River, any distance greater than five lengths is considered "easily."
The Terriers began the morning racing with a win in the novice eight race, 6:12.49 to 6:17.47.
