June 16, 2003 | Men's Basketball
In addition to its slate of 18 America East Conference games, B. U. will play nine non-league games including dates at state rivals Boston College and Holy Cross and games at Ohio University, Fordham, and at the Big 10's University of Michigan.
The Terriers out-of-conference home schedule consists of games against the Atlantic 10's Saint Joseph's University, Youngstown State, Harvard, and Cleveland State.
B. U. opens the season with a renewal of its series with Holy Cross. After a one-year hiatis, the two teams meet on Nov. 22 in Worcester. A week later, on Nov. 29, the Terriers attempt to knock off Commonwealth Avenue foe and Big East member Boston College. It is the third meeting between B. U. and BC in three years.
In between those two in-state games, on Nov. 25, the Terriers host their highest-profile home game of the season when they open Case Gym to take on the Saint Joe's Hawks. A Dec. 1 date with Youngstown State of the Horizon League follows. The Terriers have never met the Penguins in men's basketball.
B. U.'s first out-of-state road trip sees the Terriers travel to Athens, Ohio on Dec. 3 to face Ohio University, a team the Terriers rolled against in a 21-point win last year.
Home dates against Harvard on Dec. 9 and another Horizon League opponent in Cleveland State on Dec. 22 are next. The Terriers wrap up their non-conference schedule with a New York City trip to face Fordham University in the Bronx three days after Christmas. B. U. heads straight to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face the University of Michigan Wolverines on Dec. 30.
The Terriers and the rest of America East welcome the University of Maryland-Baltimore County to the conference in 2003-04, expanding the league's men's basketball membership to 10 schools and the schedule to 18 games.
After New Year's, the Terriers jump right into their conference schedule with a home game against the University of New Hampshire on Jan. 2. B. U. faces newcomer UMBC, its first-ever meetings with the Retrievers, with a road game on Jan. 14 and a home date on Feb. 12.
At the conclusion of the regular season, B. U. plays host to the America East Championship for the second year in a row. The first three rounds of the championship, to be held at Walter Brown Arena, will begin with first-round games on Friday, March 5, to be followed by quarterfinal games on March 6 and semifinal games on March 7. The America East Championship game will be played on March 13 at the home of the highest remaining seed. It will be aired live on ESPN.
