Breznikar Leads Women In Win Over Vermont, 214-81

BURLINGTON, VT- Sophomore Lidija Breznikar (Kotpje, Solvenia) set three University of Vermont pool records in helping to lead the Terrier women's swimming and diving team to a 214-81 victory over the host Catamounts on Saturday, Jan. 24.
B.U., which is now 3-4-1 in dual-meet competition after starting the season 0-3-1, won 15 of 16 events against Vermont. In addition, in eight of the 16 events, the Terriers finished 1-2.
Breznikar set the Forbush Natatorium pool records for the 200-meter butterfly in 2:90.84 seconds, while junior teammate Emily Moreno (Oakland, NJ) finished second. Breznikar set two more Vermont pool records before the meet ended, completing the 400-meter IM in 4:32.23 and the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:22.77. Freshman Ryan Kenny (Springfield, MA) was runnerup to Breznikar in the latter event.
Junior Lauren Foster (Lake Quivira, KS) and sophomore Meagan Breiland (Mesa, AZ) took first and second, respectively, in both the 200-yard and the 100-yard freestyle events. Freshman Tanaz Irani (Orlando, FL) notched two more first-place finishes for the Terriers, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 26.15 and the 100 fly in 1:01.30. Sophomore Hannah Mulry (Macungie, PA) was second in the 50 free, and Moreno was second in the 100 fly.
Senior Kelli Sweeting (Sarasota, Fl) took first in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.89 and was second in the 100-yard backstroke behind sophomore Kila Englebrook (Mechanicsburg, PA), who took the event in 1:02.06. Freshman Marina Morie (Honolulu, HI) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.68, while sophomore teammate Brittnye Kusmick (Strongsville, OH) took third. Morie also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:23.43, while sophomore teammate Natalie Boyd (Pittsburgh, PA) placed second. In the 1650-yard freestyle, B.U. took three of the top four positions as freshman Lauren Cammisano (Hinsadale, IL), Boyd, and sophomore Bronwen Price (Arnold, MD) took second, third and fourth, respectively.
The Terriers took the top two positions in the 400-yard medley relay, as Englebrook, Irani, Mulry and junior Courtlandt McKinlay (Cheshire, CT) finished seconds ahead teammates Sweeting, Breznikar, Morie and Breiland. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Foster, Morie, Boyd and Breiland took first in 1:42.30.
The Terriers swept the 3-meter diving event with seniors Stacey Gallacher (Horseheads, NY) and Kristen Stratton (Aurora, CO) along with freshman Megan White (Falmouth, ME) finished 1-2-3, respectively. In the 1-meter diving event, Stratton took first, followed by Gallacher in second.
The Terriers compete in one more regular-season meet against the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, January 31st at 1:00 in Providence, Rhode Island before the America East competitions in late February.
