Swimming and Diving Hosts Binghamton Saturday

The Boston University swimming and diving team opens its 2005-06 season with a home meet against Binghamton Saturday afternoon at the Fit-Rec Center on the BU campus. The meet will begin at 1 p.m., feature 16 events and both the men???s and women???s teams will compete. The meet will also feature the debut of Terrier head coach Bill Smyth. Smyth, who was an All-American at Virginia from 1990-94, has been the assistant coach at his alma mater the last eight years. This is his first head coaching job.
The BU men are led by senior Mike Kelly (Shrewsbury, N.J.), who was the team's top point producer at the 2005 America East Championships with 45 points. The Terriers' premier sprinter, he finished fourth in the 50 (:21.37), 100 (:47.11), and 200 (1:43.82) freestyle. Junior Griffin Moodie (Edina, Minn.) also accounted for multiple points, as he was third in the 100 breaststroke (:59.49), sixth in the 100 fly (:53.20) and ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.97). Junior Michael Bear (Arlington, Va.) added 16 points for the Terriers with an eighth-place finish in the 400 IM (4:28.44) and a 12th-place showing in the 500 free (4:52.64).
On the women???s side, Lidija Breznikar (Kotlje, Slovenia) is the Terriers??? top returnee from last year???s league championship meet. She was fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.69 (14 points), sixth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.77 (13 points), and seventh in the 200 IM in 2:10.32 (12 points). Diver Megan White (Falmouth, Maine) finished third in the America East Championship three-meter event (442.20, 16 points) and was fourth in the one meter (252.75, 15 points).
The Terriers host six total events this season, leading up to the America East Championships at the Fit Rec Center on Feb. 15-18.
