Men's Crew Takes First Jablonic Cup Since 1995
May 1, 2005 | Men's Rowing
BOSTON - Despite falling behind early, the B.U. men's varsity eight crew steadily gained momentum and ultimately turned back Wisconsin and MIT to capture the Jablonic Cup on the Charles River on Sunday, May 1. It is the first time the Terriers have won the cup since 1995.
It was nearly a sweep for the Terriers, who saw the first freshman boat pull out a 3.9 second win over the Badgers. The second varsity could not catch Wisconsin and finished second by a mere 2.5 seconds. B.U. had not had a lot of luck in the Jablonic Cup, winning just five races in the past 10 years. Two of those came on Sunday.
The varsity boat trailed Wisconsin by a length early, but after the 500 meter mark, the Terriers began to gain, and were nearly even passing under the Mass. Ave. bridge. B.U. took the lead after clearing the bridge and finished first with a time of 6:04.4. Wisconsin clocked in at 6:13.4, followed by MIT at 6:28.4.
Wisconsin's second varsity also jumped out to a boatlength lead, but as in the varsity race, the Terriers edged back within a few feet before the Badgers held on for the slight edge at the finish with a time of 6:07.0. The Terriers were right behind at 6:09.5.
The Terriers will compete against Brown University on Saturday, May 7 at home.
