Men's Varsity Crew Seeded Ninth For Eastern Sprints
May 10, 2005 | Men's Rowing
The Terrier men's heavyweight crew has been seeded ninth for this Sunday's Eastern Sprints that will be rowed on Worcester's Lake Quinsigamond and will row against third-seeded Northeastern, fourth-seeded Navy, 10th-seeded Wisconsin, 15th-seeded Georgetown, and 16th-seeded MIT.
These six crews will conclude the morning's heats as they are set to compete at noon.
This marks the highest seeding the varsity has received since they were eighth in 1998. Last year, the heavyweight boat was seeded 11th.
"Certainly we would like to be seeded first," said Terrier head coach Rodney Pratt, whose crew finished the spring regatta season with a 5-3 record. "But, I think our seeding is realistic. I think if we row the type of race we are capable of, we could reach the afternoon finals."
The top two crews in each of the morning heats will advance to the afternoon finals. The last time the Terrier heavyweight crew advanced to the finals was in 1990 when they finished sixth overall.
Of their competition in the morning heat, the Terriers have rowed against three of the crews during the season and were 2-1 against them.
On April 9, the Terriers finished second to Northeastern in the row for the Arlett Cup. The Huskies covered the 2000-meter Charles River course in 5:43.7, while the Terriers were clocked in 5:45.7.
Then, on May 1st, the Terriers won the Jablonic Cup by virtue of their beating Wisconsin, 6:04.4 to 6:13.4. MIT was also involved in the regatta and the Engineers rowed the course in 6:28.4.
The Terriers have three other boats entered in the Sprints-second varsity, first freshmen, and second freshmen.
The second varsity is seeded eighth and will be entered in the 10:48 morning heat against second-seeded Cornell, fifth-seeded Northeastern, 11th- seeded Syracuse, and 14th-seeded Georgetown.
The first freshmen are sixth and will meet top-seeded Brown, seventh-seeded Navy, 12th-seeded Rutgers, and 13th-seeded Cornell. Their race is scheduled to get underway at 9:36 a.m.
Finally, the second freshmen have the highest seeding of the four Terrier boats as they are fifth. They will join top-seeded Brown, fourth-seeded Rutgers, eighth-seeded Georgetown, and ninth-seeded MIT in the day's first race at 8:00 a.m.
