Freshman Eight Leads Terriers At IRA National Championship
June 2, 2005 | Men's Rowing
CAMDEN, NJ--The freshman eight led three Terrier crews in the first morning of action at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championship which got underway on Thursday, June 2 on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
The Terriers, who were seeded sixth, finished third in their morning heat and advanced to the semifinals which are slated for Friday at noon. In Thursday morning's heat, the Terriers finished second to third-seeded Princeton by less than two seconds--6:09.96 to 6:11.26.
In Friday's semifinals, B.U. will be pitted against Harvard, Washington, and Navy.
While the freshmen performance was a high point for the Terriers, a major disappointment occurred in the first varsity race where B.U., which had been seeded seventh, finished fourth in the morning heat. The Terriers' time of 6:07.12 put them behind top-seeded California (5:57.14), Navy (6:00.82), and Michigan (6:07.12).
By virtue of their finish, the Terriers were forced to come back on Thursday afternoon to race in a repechage against Rutgers, Columbia, and Florida Tech. The Terriers must win their heat in order to advance to Friday's semifinals. Should they lose, they would row in the third-level final.
The second varsity boat is also entered in Thursday afternoon's repechage by virtue of it finishing third in its morning heat. The Terriers, who were seeded 10 th, finished third in their morning heat with a time of 6:19.86. Both California (6:07.87) and Harvard (6:12.91) finished ahead of the Terriers.
In Thursday afternoon's repechage, B.U. will be pitted against Penn, Oregon State, Michigan, and Minnesota. As is the case with the varsity boat, the second varsity must win its heat in order to advance to the semifinals. Otherwise, B.U. will row in the third-level final.
