Three Terrier Crews Advance To IRA Semifinal Heats

CAMDEN, NJ--The Terrier varsity heavyweight crew rebounded from a disappointing morning heat to win its repechage on Thursday, June 5 to lead three B.U. boats into Friday's semifinals at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championship which got underway on Thursday, June 2 on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
The heavyweight crew, who was seeded sixth entering the competition, finished fourth in its morning heat and would have earned a berth in the third-level finals had it not fared well in its repechage heat Thursday afternoon. The Terriers responded to the challenge by beating Rutgers, Columbia, and Florida Tech to earn a berth in Friday's semifinals.
The Terriers covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:10.30, while Rutgers was second in 6:15.0, Columbia was third in 6:15.80, and Florida Tech was fourth in 6:21.90.
In Friday's semis, the Terriers will row against Washington, California, Stanford, and Oregon State.
The freshman eight did not have to row in a repechage on Thursday afternoon as it advanced to Friday's semifinals by virtue of its finishing second in the morning heat. The Terriers, who were seeded sixth, trailed only third-seeded Princeton by less than two seconds--6:09.96 to 6:11.26.
In Friday's semifinals, B.U. will be pitted against Harvard, Washington, and Navy.
The Terriers' other boat--the second varsity, advanced to Friday's semifinals when it finished second to the University of Pennsylvania in the repechage. The Quakers won the event in 6:17.71, while the Terriers were clocked in 6:19.3.
In the morning heat, B.U., which was seeded 10 th, finished third with a time of 6:19.86. Both California (6:07.87) and Harvard (6:12.91) finished ahead of the Terriers.
In Friday's semifinals, the Terriers will row against Cornell, Yale, Washington, Harvard, and Navy.
