BOSTON - Eight of the Boston University women's varsity women rowers competed at the Head of the Connecticut in the collegiate pairs event on Sunday, Oct. 7.
The BU women were the only entrants in their category, so it turned out to be a race for the gold amongst the BU rowers. Since there were less than five entries, gold was awarded only to the top finisher. Good-natured inter-squad rivalry was intense as the athletes took to the line.
The conditions were gusty, windy cross-tail conditions made the three-mile course challenging to negotiate. Seniors Elene Brett-Evans (Toronto, Ont.) and Veronika Karlsson (SydKoster, Sweden) started last and finished first, passing most of their teammates on the twisty course. Freshmen Lexie Somers (St. Davids, Pa.), Lee-Ann Persse (Elgin, South Africa) and Mariel Boomgaardt (Ottawa, Ont.) raced for the first time under BU colors, showing good composure in the difficult conditions.
The purpose of the regatta for the BU crew was to give the athletes an early season race as they prepare for their next race, the Head of the Charles on Oct. 21, where BU will compete in the Women's Championship Four and Championship Eight events.

1. Elene Brett-Evans/Veronika Karlsson 23:13.8
