NEWARK, Del. - Delaware took control of the game late in the first half and never relinquished it as the Blue Hens (4-6, 1-0 CAA) claimed a 73-55 win over the Boston University men's basketball team (3-7) Saturday evening in the Bob Carpenter Center. UDel went on a 33-11 run spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second en route to the victory.
Delaware's Herb Courtney led all scorers with 18 points. Sophomore Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) tallied 13 points to lead BU. Sophomore Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ont.) added 11 points for the Terriers. Red-shirt sophomore Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored six points in his first game this season after injury.
Delaware started the second half as the Hens finished the first, going on a 15-4 run to take a 48-25 lead at 14:38. UD shot 65.4 percent (17-for-26) in the final frame to BU's 43.8 pct. (14-for-32). The Blue Hens took their largest lead of the game, 55-27, on a basket by Brian Johnson at 12:11.
Lowe scored BU's first seven points of the game as the Terriers took a 7-4 lead at 16:10, but Delaware went on a 9-2 run to take a 13-11 advantage three minutes later. The Blue Hens forced an up-tempo game that hurried BU's offense and caused empty Terrier possessions.
A Brittain basket at 8:56 trimmed UDel's lead to 15-14, but the Fightin' Blue Hens went on an 18-7 rally to close the first half, including a string of seven-straight free throws. BU shot just 26.7 percent (8-for-30) in the first frame, while Delaware made 50.0 percent of its attempts (12-for-24). The Terriers' shooting woes extended to the 3-point line where BU made just 2-of-13 (15.4 pct.).
The Terriers break for the Christmas holiday before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 29 in Amherst against UMass at 7:30 p.m.
