March 31, 2007 | Women's Rowing
Camden, N.J. - Boston University women's crew competed in the Playfair Cup against Navy and George Washington and finished second in the varsity race Saturday morning on the Cooper River. BU's second varsity boat won its race against Navy.
The varsity race was very close for the first half of the course, with the Navy and Boston University boats virtually even for the first 1000 meters. The Mids slowly gained an advantage over the next 500 meters until Navy held a one-half of a boat length lead, then finished the race strong.
Boston University completed the course in 7:20.67. Navy won in 7:15.14, while George Washington followed in third place 13 seconds after BU.
The Playfair Cup was donated in the name of Virginia Playfair by her family who hold ties to each of the three institutions involved in the race.
The second varsity boat, coxed by Meghan Elwell, won by 4.2 seconds over the Mids, handing Navy its only loss of the day. The first novice boat placed second in its race.
