CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After winning the New England Championship for the second year in a row, Boston University senior Andrea Walkonen has been named the America East Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Walkonen won her second race in as many attempts this season on Saturday, traversing the 5k course at Franklin Park in 17:19.
The Jaffrey, N.H., native helped the Terriers to a fifth-place finish out of 45 teams at the meet and won her sixth race of the past two years, beating out 300 other runners on the course. This week's performance boosted BU into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association regional poll for the first time this season, earning the 11th spot in the Northeast.
A BU runner has been tabbed as the top runner in the America East after all three races the team has competed in this season, after junior Erin Lagasse won the Dartmouth Invitational to open the season and Walkonen won the Ted Owen Invitational on Sept. 20.
Walkonen and the Terriers are off until Saturday, Oct. 25, when BU will run at the CCSU Mini Meet in New Britain, Conn., where Walkonen set the course record earlier this season.
