BOSTON - Highlighted by at least six home games at Agganis Arena, the Boston University men's basketball complete schedule for 2008-09 - the Terriers' 100th season in program history - has been announced by head coach Dennis Wolff.
The historic regular season will begin and end at the state-of-the-art facility, commencing with George Washington on Friday, Nov. 14, and then concluding with America East foe Hartford on Sunday, March 1. During the home opener, members of the 1958-59 Elite Eight team will be honored at halftime for the 50th anniversary of their achievements.
In other Agganis Arena action, the Terriers will host Marshall (Dec. 6), Holy Cross (Jan. 2), Vermont (Jan. 14) and Albany (Feb. 5).
"Now that the schedule has been completed, my thought is that the combination of a challenging non-conference schedule with what will be a wide-open conference race will make for a very entertaining season," noted Wolff. "The parity among the teams in our league will make for a competitive season."
Every home men's basketball game will either be televised or streamed live online through BU All-Access at GoTerriers.com. In total, the schedule features matchups with four of the 2008 NCAA tournament participants, including three conference champions.
BU hits the road for the first time with a visit to Bucknell (Nov. 18) and then returns home to open The Roof with St. Peter's (Nov. 22), who is playing a return game after hosting the Terriers in one of last year's ESPNU BracketBuster pool games. BU will again be a part of the pool this season and will host a to-be-determined opponent, marking the first time an America East team will have a home game during the BracketBuster series.
The road portion of the non-conference schedule will also feature new and old opponents, as the Terriers confront cross-town rivals Northeastern (Nov. 25) on a NESN broadcast and Harvard (Dec. 3) along with a first-ever meeting against Mount St. Mary's (Nov. 29), the defending Northeast Conference champion. BU will also visit Big East power Notre Dame (Dec. 13) for the first time since 1987 before traveling to defending Ivy League champion Cornell (Dec. 29), another new opponent, to end the year.
The Terriers kick off the conference schedule at Albany (Jan. 8) and then host New Hampshire in the league home opener on Jan. 11.
The experience-laden team will face a tough test between January and February when BU plays on the road in five of six games, including visits to Maine (Jan. 25), Hartford (Jan. 31), UMBC (Feb. 2), New Hampshire (Feb. 7) and Vermont (Feb. 11).
Boston University will end its 100th regular season with three straight home games. The Terriers face an ESPNU BracketBusters pool team on Feb. 21 and then host Maine at The Roof on Feb. 26. Senior Day for Matt Wolff, Marques Johnson and Sam Tully will occur at Agganis on March 1 when Hartford travels to town.
Albany will host the 2009 edition of the America East Championship, which runs from March 6 - March 8 at SEFCU Arena. The highest remaining seed will host the title game on Saturday, March 14, at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
The Terriers return their top seven scorers, including second-team America East honoree Corey Lowe and league rookie of the year John Holland, from their 2007-08 team, which won seven of its eight games in February before advancing to the America East semifinals.
Students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans can first see the team in action at the Roof 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 for Terrier Tip-off, a season-opening event featuring both Terrier basketball teams.
