
Walkonen Wins, Terriers Finish Second at America East Championship

COCKEYSVILLE, Md. - Senior Andrea Walkonen won the America East Championship for the second consecutive season, helping the Boston University women's cross country team to a second-place finish out of the nine teams assembled at Oregon Ridge Park on Saturday morning. Three top-eight finishers helped the Terriers score 41 points, second only to Stony Brook, which captured its second straight conference title with 29 points.
Walkonen navigated the 5k course in 16:48.2, leading a pack of 76 runners and finishing 34 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Walkonen has now won all three races that she has entered this season.
Junior Erin Lagasse finished fourth in 17:33.1 and junior Sarah Mosser was eighth with a 17:57.9. Sophomore Kathleen Davies came in 12th with an 18:11.0 time and freshman Katie Matthews rounded out the scoring with an 18:19.9 time good for 16th place.
Senior Mollie Zapata (33rd, 18:56.9) and freshmen Molly James (38th, 19:05.3), Sarah Healy (45th, 19:36.5) and Madeline Steiner (46th, 19:37.8) were BU's other entrants in the conference championship.
Finishing behind the Terriers was New Hampshire (74), Vermont (131), Albany (136), Binghamton (143), Maine (163), UMBC (192) and Hartford (238).
BU is back in action on Nov. 15, competing in the NCAA Division I Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in New York.
